Professional Medical Interpreter Certificate©  in Diabetes  (PMIC©  – Diabetes ) (A 20-Hour Certificate Program) 

Screening Test

For interpreters who are applying for acceptance to the MI Special Program in Diabetes and who do not currently meet the requirements. 

 

Admission Requirements for the PMIC©  – Diabetes: One of the following:

  • CMI or CCHI Certificate
  • Core-CHI certificate holders will need to take the Screening Test
  • Completion Certificate from a 60-Hour Language-Specific Program
  • Washington State DSHS Certified or Authorized Medical Interpreter
  • Bilingual Healthcare Provider* (MD, DO, PA, ARNP, DNP, PharmD, RN)

If you do not meet the requirements, or if you have a Core-CHI or a 40-hour medical interpreting certificate (minimum requirement for non-healthcare providers), you will need to take the Screening Test which includes:

1. Sight Translation Exam (in the language pair)
2. Consecutive Interpreting Exam (in the language pair)
3. Health Literacy Exam (English)
4. Comprehensive Anatomy and Medical Terminology Exam (English)
5. Standards and Ethics Exam (English)

PMIC ©– Diabetes Certificate Program Information

  1. The PMIC ©– Diabetes certificate program is designed to provide additional training in diabetes beyond that covered in most medical interpreter training programs.
  2. The graduate from the program would be prepared to interpret for newly diagnosed patients with diabetes and would be able to work closely with diabetic educators.
  3. The PMIC ©– Diabetes is a credential that certifies the interpreter has demonstrated the knowledge and skills to interpret for patients with diabetes in their language pair.
  4. This program is the first-level certificate in diabetes. For experienced and advanced interpreters, we will be offering (PMIC © – Diabetes Level 2 Certificate which requires an additional 20-hour curriculum and a practicum experience with a diabetic educator.

  • To ensure the language proficiency of candidates, we accept interpreters who have passed national certification or have passed the Washington State DSHS certified or authorized interpreter exams, or who have completed a 60-hour language-specific medical interpreter program with a strong knowledge base in medical concepts.
  • PMIC ©– Diabetes program is designed to provide additional training in diabetes beyond that covered in most medical interpreter training programs.

  • This program is the first-level certificate in diabetes.

Lesson 1: Diabetes 101 - Overview of Diabetes (2 Hours)
(Lesson 1 and 2 may be taken together.)
Lesson 2: Overview of Diabetes Testing (2 Hours)
Lesson 3: Home Blood Glucose Monitoring (2 Hours)
Lesson 4: Diabetes Management: Nutrition. Weight Control. Exercise. (2 Hours)
Lesson 5: Complications of Diabetes (2 Hours)
Lesson 6: The Eye Exam and the Foot Exam (2 Hours)
Lesson 7: Introduction to Oral Diabetic Medications (2 Hours)
Lesson 8: Introduction to Insulin Therapy (2 Hours)
Lesson 9: Coping with Diabetes. Diabetes Glossary. Review for the Final Exam. (2 Hours)
2-Hour Elective (Any course about diabetes that is not covered in the curriculum, or more intensive course in any one topic in the curriculum. May also include practicum with a Certified Diabetic Educator.)
Final Exam: Multiple Choice 150 Questions and Oral Consecutive Interpreting Exam in the language pair (Live or by Computer).
