Remote Interpreting: OPI and VRI (4 Hours CEU Course - April 4, 2021)

Learning Objectives and Learning Activities

  1. Review standards of practice for medical interpreters (IMIA, NCIHC) and ethics (Washington State, IMIA, NCIHC) in general and as they apply to phone and video interpreting (15 minutes).
  2. Explain the difference between F2F (face-to-face or onsite interpreting), and OPI, VRI interpreting. (15 minutes.)
  3. Discusses challenges of remote interpreting, and how to address those challenges, including adherence to medical interpreting standards. (15 minutes)
  4. Discuss the skills and techniques for VRI. (30 minutes)
  5. Discuss equipment requirements and basic troubleshooting. (15 minutes)      
  6. Practice Consecutive Interpreting with simulated VRI and application of Washington State Ethical Standards. (15 minutes)
  7. Discuss OPI skills and techniques. (45 minutes)
  8. Practice interpreting in a simulated OPI clinical encounter with application of ethical standards.  (30 minutes)
  9. Explain what is the difference between telemedicine and telehealth. (15 minutes)
  10. Identify the different types of telemedicine and practice interpreting brief scenarios. (45 minutes)
