Oncology and Hematology 3 Credits (3 Hours)

This is an online course to help you prepare to interpret in oncology and hematology encounters. You have 4 weeks to complete this course.
For Level 1 and Level 2 Interpreters: Level 1: Beginner Interpreters.
Level 2: For experienced or certified interpreters who want to learn more about medical concepts.
This is a language-neutral course for all languages.However, there are exercises to give you opportunity to practice sight translation and consecutive interpreting in your language pair.

The participant will gain improved understanding of the anatomy and medical terminology for major diseases, diagnostic procedures and treatments beyond the basic level by participating in the learning activties that include Powerpoint presentations, audio recordings for listening practice, videos for interpreting practice and quizzes/exams to help enhance comprehension and improve retention of the information.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, the participant would be able to:
- Explain the major blood components and their function related to specific diseases. (1 hour)
- Explain the difference between hematologist and oncologist and common diagnostic procedures that they perform. (15 minutes)
- Explain the difference between anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, lipoma, melanoma, sarcoma and carcinoma. (15 minutes)
- Explain what is the difference between cancer and tumor and examples pertaining to the respective conditions. (15 minutes)
- Explain what is biopsy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy and become familiar with patient information for these treatments. (15 minutes)
- Practice interpreting for the following situations: Blood transfusion, chemotherapy, biopsy. (30 minutes)
